About the points test.

The Australian skilled migration points test applies to the subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas. The official pass mark is 65 points, but competitive occupations typically require 80-90+ points to receive an invitation through SkillSelect invitation rounds.

State nomination can add 5 points (190 visa) or 15 points (491 visa). These are not included in the calculator above because they depend on which visa you apply for. See our 189 vs 190 vs 491 comparison to understand the differences.

Frequently asked questions.

How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator provides an estimate based on the official Department of Home Affairs points table. Your actual score may differ after a formal skills assessment and document verification. Use this as a guide, not a guarantee.
What is the pass mark for skilled migration?
The official pass mark is 65 points. However, most occupations require 80-90+ points to receive an invitation in current SkillSelect rounds. Less competitive occupations may receive invitations at lower scores.
Which visas use the points test?
The subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), 190 (Skilled Nominated), and 491 (Skilled Work Regional) visas all use the points test. Employer-sponsored visas (482, 186) and partner visas (820/801) do not require a points test.
How can I improve my points score?
The fastest ways to boost your score are improving your English test result (IELTS 8+ adds 20 points), gaining more skilled work experience, or applying for state nomination (5 points for 190, 15 points for 491).
Does state nomination add points?
Yes. A 190 state nomination adds 5 points. A 491 regional nomination (from a state or eligible family member) adds 15 points. State nomination is not included in this calculator because it depends on the visa you apply for, not your personal profile.
