What is an EOI?

An Expression of Interest (EOI) is a declaration submitted through SkillSelect that tells the Department of Home Affairs you are interested in applying for a skilled visa.

What you declare

  • Your nominated occupation (ANZSCO code)
  • Points claim across all categories
  • Preferred visa subclass (189, 190, 491)
  • Preferred states for nomination (if applicable)

What happens next

The department runs regular invitation rounds. If your points score is high enough, you receive an invitation to apply. You then have 60 days to lodge a complete visa application.

Use the points calculator to estimate your score before submitting.

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to commonly asked questions about our platform

  • How long is an EOI valid?

An EOI remains active in SkillSelect for 2 years from the date of submission. After 2 years, it expires and you need to submit a new one.

  • Can I submit multiple EOIs?

You can have one EOI per visa subclass active at a time. You can submit EOIs for different visa subclasses simultaneously (e.g. one for 189 and one for 190).

  • Does submitting an EOI cost anything?

No, submitting an EOI through SkillSelect is free. You only pay visa application fees if and when you receive an invitation and choose to apply.
