How to Get State Nomination for Subclass 190 - Complete Guide

Step-by-step guide to getting state or territory nomination for the Australian 190 Skilled Nominated visa.

Person reviewing documents at desk.

The subclass 190 visa requires nomination from an Australian state or territory. Here is how to get it.

How state nomination works

Each state runs its own nomination program with different occupation lists, requirements, and processing times. When a state nominates you, it adds 5 points to your score and means you agree to live and work in that state for at least 2 years.

The general process

  1. Check state occupation lists - Your occupation must be on the specific state’s list, not just the national SOL. View all state nomination guides.
  2. Meet the state’s requirements - Beyond the national visa requirements, each state has its own criteria (points thresholds, work experience, English levels).
  3. Submit an EOI via SkillSelect - Select the states you are interested in.
  4. Apply for state nomination - Through the state’s own portal with supporting documents.
  5. Receive nomination - Processing takes 4-12 weeks depending on the state.
  6. Lodge your visa - Within 60 days of receiving your 190 invitation.

State-by-state overview

  • NSW - Largest program, competitive. Strong for ICT, engineering, health.
  • Victoria - Large program with broad occupation list. Popular for IT and education.
  • Queensland - Growing program. Good for health, engineering, trades.
  • South Australia - One of the most accessible programs with lower thresholds.
  • Western Australia - Mining and resources focus. Good for engineers and trades.

Tips for success

  • Apply to multiple states if your occupation is on several lists
  • Demonstrate genuine intention to live in the state
  • Some states prefer applicants already working or studying in the state
  • Check whether the state requires a job offer or financial commitment
